Be aware of  avr300 I2C (Single) Master Implementation.asm and avr302 I2C Slave Implementation.asm if you are more comfortable with ASM, they are both bit banged TWI routines...

500 Khz, it will drive another CPU. So you need a "slow" clock for the other CPU?   Otherwise: Clock Output Buffer   The device can output the system clock on the CLKO...
