I just got a SAMD10 Xplained mini and am trying to use it with Windows 7, Atmel Studio 7, running in Virtual Box, hosted on a macbook pro running OS 10.11.2. This setup has worked fine with my AVR Dragon for quite some time.

The dev board is properly recognized (I've setup all the USB device filters in the virt so that shouldn't be the issue) and a COM port is created. It even shows up in Atmel studio just fine but if I try to connect to the board using the device programmer I get a stream of error messages and finally a dialog:

12:24:52: [ERROR] Failed to create the connection com.atmel.avrdbg.connection.cmsis-dap with the given props., ModuleName: TCF (TCF command: Tool:setupTool failed.)
12:24:53: [ERROR] Failed to create the connection com.atmel.avrdbg.connection.cmsis-dap with the given props., ModuleName: TCF (TCF command: Tool:setupTool failed.)
12:24:54: [ERROR] Failed to create the connection com.atmel.avrdbg.connection.cmsis-dap with the given props., ModuleName: TCF (TCF command: Tool:setupTool failed.)
12:25:22: [ERROR] Failed to create the connection com.atmel.avrdbg.connection.cmsis-dap with the given props., ModuleName: TCF (TCF command: Tool:setupTool failed.)
12:25:23: [ERROR] Failed to create the connection com.atmel.avrdbg.connection.cmsis-dap with the given props., ModuleName: TCF (TCF command: Tool:setupTool failed.)
12:25:23: [ERROR] Failed to set-up tool (no context id returned).

I've tried using a powered hub, changing the virt's host controller to be 2.0 only (it's normally setup as USB 3.0), and installing the latest USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 7 from Intel. Nothing seems to work.

Anyone have advice for how to proceed here?
