Hi, i have a question in terms of EDBG.

EDBG is a great Tool and i hope i could use it for a custom board.

I could use my Atmel ICE, but i would love an onboard solution.

I regoniced Arduino has a Arduino M0 Pro / Zero Board with an Atmel32u4 EDBG onboard.

There are also some EDBG firmware in the Atmel Studio Install Path (mEDBG, nEDBG, EDBG...).

My question so far is: "Is there a open tolerated way to use it for a custom board? Is the firmware and schematic available for hobbyists?"

Can i use the Arduino M0 Pro / Zero or an xplained Board schematic as a design reference with the Atmel Studio EDBG firmware?

Is there an pre flashed Atmel32u4 to buy available?

The Arduino Zero has a genuine EDBG chip.    As far as I know it is on a UC32 chip.

XPRO boards contain genuine EDBG chips.

 

XMINI boards contain different mEDBG firmware appropriate to the board target e.g. debugWIRE, SWD, UPDI, ...

The mEDBG firmware is on an ATmega32U4.    It has significantly SLOWER performance than a geniune EDBG.

 

I presume that both EDBG and mEDBG are proprietary.    You can always ask MCHIP nicely.    Arduino must have asked for the Zero.

 

Apparently the mEDBG firmware is not protected.    So you could steal the binaries but they probably require some EEPROM binary for everything to work.

 

Yes,    I definitely prefer having an onboard EDBG when developing.

Your users only need a bootloader or simple ISP  e.g. an onboard USBASP

An absolut perfect explanation.

I overlooked the AT32UC3A for EDBG on the XPRO and Zero board.

After this everything makes more sense ("Irren ist menschlich").

I will ask MCHIP about mEDBG and EDBG!

Probably i am lucky as you said and get the firmware.

At least it is worth a try.

Hi,

 

Did you ever contact MicroChip to ask them about using an EDBG on your custom board and getting firmware for it?  I am thinking about doing the same.
